Jerry and the Elastic Band

Have you ever shot an elastic band using your fingers? Jerry was quite the elastic band marksman.

One summer he was working in an office, in the drafting department. In the same office were 5 other guys; and one lady.

Being summer meant that there were flies. Being that we were guys meant that we had to get the flies. That's where the elastics came in.

Using the forefinger as an anchor for one end, you pulled the other end of the elastic back and then let fly. The object was to hit the fly with a shot that was parallel to the surface the fly was on. Now and then some dummy would do a perpendicular shot and get a bulls eye. Yuck.

Being the youngest, one day Jerry was goaded into taking a shot at the back of the head of the only female in the office. So he loaded his finger, took aim, and let it fly. Unfortunately, just as Jerry released the shot, the lady turned around and the elastic hit her in the nose. What a look!

The room got very quiet and everywhere you looked men were "nose to the grindstone" working on drawings. However, later at the coffee wagon Jerry was treated and received many congratulatory slaps on the back.

The above was inspired by a true story recalled by the editor.
